What MICR is for

MICR is printed in machine-readable characters on cheques to support clearing. The nine digits are commonly explained as city, bank and branch segments. This tool separates those digits but does not maintain an authoritative current mapping from every segment to a named branch.

MICR is not IFSC

IFSC is an eleven-character identifier used in participating electronic transfer routing. MICR is a nine-digit cheque-clearing identifier. Do not paste one into a form asking for the other.

Protect the cheque

Do not upload an uncensored cheque to a public service. It can expose your name, account information, signature style and document numbers. When an institution requires a cancelled cheque, use its secure channel and follow its masking or cancellation instructions.

Confirm before a mandate

If a form requires MICR for payroll, insurance or a mandate, read it from the current bank document and confirm with the bank if the layout is unclear. A structural decoder cannot confirm that the account is active or belongs to a person.

What the nine digits represent

A MICR code printed on an Indian cheque is commonly explained as three digits for the city, three for the bank and three for the branch. This decoder separates those positions and reports whether the input is exactly nine digits. It does not maintain a complete current authority mapping from every segment to a physical branch, so it never invents a bank or branch name from the digits alone.

MICR and IFSC answer different questions

MICR supports cheque clearing and appears in the machine-readable line of a cheque. IFSC is an eleven-character identifier used for participating electronic transfer routing. An account number identifies a beneficiary account. These values are not interchangeable, even when a form asks for several of them together. Read each value from a current bank-controlled source.

Do not upload a cheque to decode it

A cheque image may reveal the account holder’s name, account number, signature style, cheque serial, branch and document layout. This tool accepts only the nine digits and performs no image upload. When an employer, insurer or institution requests a cancelled cheque, use its authenticated channel and follow its masking instructions rather than placing the document in a public form or chat.

Common entry errors

Spaces, dashes and copied labels are removed only where the validator explicitly permits normalization. A result with fewer or more than nine digits is rejected. A nine-digit result is structurally valid, not operationally verified. Old cheque books can survive branch or account changes, so confirm current details when setting up payroll, insurance, electronic mandates or refunds.

Cheque-safety workflow

  1. Use a current cheque leaf or authenticated bank statement.
  2. Read MICR, IFSC and account number as separate fields.
  3. Confirm that the account holder and intended purpose match.
  4. Write “CANCELLED” only as instructed without obscuring required printed details.
  5. Send the document only through the recipient’s verified secure channel.
  6. Keep a record of where and why it was submitted.

What to do when the layout is unclear

Cheque designs differ. Do not infer a code from the cheque serial or transaction code. Contact the issuing bank through an official channel and ask which printed group is the MICR. Never disclose an OTP, PIN, card security code or online-banking password during that confirmation.
